Television Production

Alongside their extensive theory and contextual studies Television students at BU learn all aspects, creative and practical, of the craft of making television programmes.

During their 3 years here students are involved with creating around a dozen different films and programmes across all genres - factual and fictional - both on location and in the professional HD studio.

In line with current industry needs they not only learn how to develop projects from the first idea right through to the finished film but also acquire technical skills which enable them confidently to operate cameras, sound recording and editing equipment in a thoroughly professional way.

Our graduate films feature regularly in the RTS student awards and our graduates have gone to key positions in the TV industry, picking up BAFTAs and other awards along the way. In the final year here each student makes two films, and here are outlines of some of them. A selection will be screened during the show.

Sam Ardley - "Two Soldiers"
  • Launch-imageTwo Soldiers
  • Two Soldiers tells the story of Private James Atley, a young soldier in World War 2 Germany who finds himself in the middle of a war zone after being ambushed by Nazis. He takes refuge in between two buildings on a farm in Aachen, surrounded by dying friends, and takes out a photo of his family, before fleeing into some nearby woods.
  • Private Atley hides out until the next day, and encounters a wounded and unarmed nazi officer in a field outside the woods, and so he is faced with the question; do I redeem my cowardly decision to flee the war zone by killing the wounded, unarmed and seemingly helpless officer, or do I let him continue?

Felicity Arkell - "John"
  • Launch-imageJohn
  • Is an ordinary documentary about a man and woman and their life together
  • This short documentary focuses on an elderly woman, as she reflects on her life with her husband, John. She talks about love at first sight, the few times she spent with John before he went to fight in the war, her feelings when she thought he had been killed in action, and her continuing love for him throughout her entire life.
  • Despite thinking she had lost him in action, he actually survived a vicious boat attack from the Germans. Despite his deadly head injuries, her love for him conquered all, and as the home movie footage shows, they went on to have a full and happy life together.
  • Since his death last year, we find out how she is coping being alone, after sixty years of marriage.

Elizabeth Beardsley - "Don't Give Up"
  • Launch-image"Don't Give Up" "But eventually, we would like to see people, with disabilities, being educated, living, and working, along-side people, without disabilities." Ken, Jen Dykes.
  • Ken and Jen Dykes both have Cerebral Palsy but don't let that stop them from living their lives to the full. Despite many barriers that have crossed their path, they have not let their heads get down and are now happily married and living together in an adapted house with 24 hour assistance from support workers.
  • This short documentary follows them in their day to day lives, looking at how they have got to where they are today and their plans for the future both personally and with the charity they have created which is aimed at helping young people with a disability get the care they need to be able to live an independent life after they have left school.

Laurie Beamont - "Silverstone Retrospective"
  • Launch-image"Silverstone Retrospective" is a 3-minute narrative highlighting the history of the location aiming to heighten atmosphere for future British Grand Prix.
  • Focusing on the history of the venue as both a World War II airfield and in its new guise as a racing track, parallels will be drawn upon between battles old and new.
  • A collection of images, cut with a high tempo, twinned with voice-over is used to convey the message. The product aimed to be a 'glossy' and stylized piece similar to that of a cinematic promotional video.
  • Certain stylistic traits such as light leaks and the manipulation of images through the use of video composition, to add an extra element of dynamism to the film. Primavera by Ludivico Einaudi has been used throughout the piece to illustrate the rich history of the location, while at the same time aiming to create excitement and anticipation within the audience.

Sam Bergson - "Therapy"
  • Launch-image"Therapy" is a drama about a bored and unengaging counsellor/therapist, who has an array of patients that constantly complain about their superficial problems. Then one day a young man called Leon has his first session with the counsellor.
  • Leon is reluctant to share his problems and berates the uncaring counsellor on why he shows so little interest in his patients. Over the course of the session, we see that Leon is hiding something quite serious as he battles with his suppressed vulnerability through his masculine front.
  • The counsellor then becomes intrigued as he strives to find out why Leon has come to therapy and through heated and emotional discussion they both realise they can help each other.

Chris Bridger - "Blind Football"
  • Launch-image"Blind Football"
  • Football is more than just a sport and its powers can reach far beyond the adulation of winning trophies. Football can be a social tool and a means of enjoyment. It can be inspiring and it can be heartbreaking. Nowhere is this theory more true than in my production - 'Blind Football'.
  • 'Blind Football' focuses on West Bromwich Albion and England international blind footballer Simon Hill, who whilst playing at the highest level possible of the sport, is forced to juggle his strict training regime with his full time job, as a means of affording to pay for his international career. Despite the financial strain that his love for football puts him under, he continues to play; down solely to one thing. His love for the game, and what the game of football brings to him on an everyday level.
  • I chose this subject as I felt that the sport is hugely under represented, and under endorsed in the modern day. Just a month after England's calamitous World Cup performance in South Africa, the Blind World Cup was held in Hereford, England - England went on to finish 4th, and no-one in anything other than the local press took any notice of it.
  • Through my film, I want to alert people to the amazing sport of 'Blind Football'; I want to educate them about sport, while also giving them an insight into what it's like being an international disabled sports-person. In a footballing world where financial incentives and personal gain sometimes over-rule morality, and integrity. Blind footballers compete purely for their love of the game; this is raw football, at it's best.

Jack Boswell - "Higher Education"
  • Launch-image"Higher Education" is a musical which is set in a student flat, during fresher's week, where none of the occupants get along. They are all very different personalities and from this stems a great deal of conflict and comedy. The songs both progress the story forward and develop the characters.
  • The music is inspired by the classic musicals of the 1950s and 1960s but the lyrics make reference to current student attitudes and lifestyles. I hope that this juxtaposition of styles makes it appealing to a younger demographic, and quite a unique piece. For example, song titles include 'Alcohol' and 'There is nothing like a one night stand'.
  • Whilst it may seem clichéd to make a student film about students, it is inspired by my observations on the student culture which I witnessed first hand, and I feel this lends some authenticity to the project.
Toby Dale - "Oxygen"
  • Launch-image"Oxygen" is a music video for the popular band Hadouken! It utilises stop motion animation to bring life and character to the classic toys, Ken and Barbie. Using this technique I created a dramatic and dark narrative which presents the Ken and Barbie relationship in a more passionate and adult way.
  • Night falls on an empty toy store. The shop is silent and still except for one doll that is climbing out of their box. The twelve inch figure can be recognised as Ken - Barbie's boyfriend. He looks at his now empty box and sees an image of himself smiling back, holding the beautiful blonde doll next to him. Seeing the picturesque image of them together, happy, he drops the box and goes looking for Barbie.
  • Two large Mecha / Robot toys lurk out of the shadows having watched Ken's actions. They look at each other with their red glowing eyes and follow the oblivious doll.
  • Ken, finding Barbie on a shelf helps her down and kisses her. The angry toys tower over the couple revealing themselves and chase them out and into the streets.
  • The couple evade their followers in a back alley and start kissing passionately, fervently touching each other, writhing their hands beneath each other's clothes. Plastic on plastic. Under cover of darkness the group of Robotic toys, surrounding the sensual couple, prowl out of the shadows. They slowly move towards them.
  • Barbie cowers behind Ken and a brutal fight begins over the beautiful doll.

James Daly - "Pink Champagne"
  • Launch-image"Pink Champagne: All In the Same Boat" is about a group of breast cancer survivors from Bournemouth who take part in a sport called dragon boat racing. The group was set up not only to act as an aid in the ladies recovery from breast cancer treatment but also as I activity where those who have been through cancer and their families can meet up with others who have been through the same experiences.
  • The documentary focuses on the affects cancer had on the ladies, what it means to be in group such as Pink Champagne and what the dynamics of the group can be like, as they have to encounter both good and bad news from being part of Pink Champagne.

Oliver Denton - "Delusions of Grandeur"
  • Launch-image"Delusions of Grandeur" is a short film about three men at a crossroads.
  • Damien is an experienced lecturer on scientific philosophy, and likes to shun the idea of leaning on religion as a coping mechanism. When brothers Robert and James kidnap him, however, his ideals are tested to their very edge. James is experiencing a crisis of sorts himself, long-suffering under his older brother's strict regime, he goes against his command to evaluate Damien and make some decisions of his own.
  • As the film progresses, some of the characters begin to question whether having all the answers is the solution. Time is not on their side, though, as Robert's own internal breakdown accelerates the longer he keeps Damien kidnapped. Seemingly unable to free himself, can Damien convince his captors to release him, or failing that, can he show courage and conviction in his ideals to keep fighting.

Tom Farmery - "The Regulars"
  • Launch-image"The Regulars" is a comedy/drama about two old men, Alfie and Jim, who have been life long punters at a small pub called The Bulls Head. The two chaps are almost the only people ever to venture in to the place, prompting the landlady Michelle to tell them she is beginning student nights to turn her fortunes around. Needless to say, her regulars meet this suggestion with considerable resistance.
  • During the film Alfie and Jim discuss both subjects of great hilarity as well as their own personal tragic tales. The film is inspired by real life 'characters' that I have met whilst working a pub part time during the term breaks, with Alfie and Jim embodying numerous aspects of their wonderful traits and back stories.

Lewis Froude - "Theo"
  • Launch-image"Theo" is a 3 minute documentary that focuses on the parent of a child who suffers from the rare heart disorder Ebstein's Anomaly, a disorder that affects 1 in every 215,000 people.
  • The piece is not so much an observation of the child and his disorder, but an exposé into the parenting choices and lifestyle his mother now has to adopt as a result of his disorder. An in-depth interview guides the piece, yet it was shot completely observationally with the camera following the mother and son as they go about their day-to-day business.

Daniel Girton - "Breakfast" and "Nothing Else Matters"
  • Launch-image"Minor - And Then I Had Breakfast" Yesterday afternoon Mac Miller strangled a man, buried him in the early hours and this morning he sits in a café. As Miller enjoys his breakfast, he recollects his killing and realises he made a terrible mistake.
  • 'Breakfast' is not about the kill but rather the killer - and how the killer deals with this situation. We follow Mac and witness the murder from his perception intercut and out of sequence from the café and the previous days events. It is a black comedy in a dramatic setting exploring morality and empathy.
  • "Major – Nothing Else Matters"
  • Noah Wake has done something - something which has forced him and Christine to flee their ordinary life and go on the run. They find refuge in a hotel where they stay to decide their future. An intense and passionate confrontation splits them apart; and to make matters worse, Noah's past catches them off guard and Christine is abducted. If Noah returns what he stole, he can have Christine back. But things are never that simple. Awaiting the exchange Noah is beaten and bundled into a van. Through luck and great determination he escapes and becomes stranded in the countryside. With a map and a stolen rucksack he is back on the run. Running to save Christine. He got them into this mess, and he's going to get them out. He will find her, because, nothing else matters.

Bruno Gonta - "A Meeting of Minds"
  • Launch-image"A Meeting of Minds", set in the world of the film industry, is a duel of wits between a movie producer and a screenwriter. One is looking to make a 'serious' film for his star actor, the other is looking to gain some recognition and both are looking to make money.
  • Viola Hutchens has had a string of books that were critically respected but commercially ignored. She was approached by Graham Kettle at a party, who invited her to his office to discuss a potential deal. This film is that meeting. The two annoy each other by misunderstanding, mishearing and purposefully misdirecting. However, for all cat and mouse games they know they need each other to achieve their aims even if it means compromising.

Emma Kosminski - "My Relative Jack the Ripper"
  • Launch-image"My Relative Jack the Ripper" is a 15 minute investigatory documentary, following Television Production student Emma Kosminsky, as she explores the truth behind an old family story. • Emma's journey takes her through the streets of White Chapel and the East End, the scene of the gruesome murders, interviewing family members and Ripper experts on her quest to try and discover her heritage and the plausibility that Aaron was indeed the famous cloaked murderer.

Harry Munday - "Time Flies" and "The Confessional"
  • Launch-imageOriginally from Bucks, I'm an aspiring drama producer. Alongside studying I've been lucky enough to gain freelance work in the production departments on Ashes to Ashes (Kudos, for BBC1), Spooks (Kudos, for BBC1) and Marchlands (ITV Studios, for ITV1).
  • I aim to climb the production ladder quickly and become a young producer of prime-time drama. Currently, I'm just about to start work with Hattrick on a new comedy/drama for BBC1, but will be available for work from mid-September. As well as producing I also greatly enjoy directing. You can find both of the short films I've recently directed (see below) at www.harrymunday.com as well as my contact information.
  • "Time Flies"(Minor)
  • The film was shot on location in various small towns and villages in Bucks, which proved to be of great excitement to the locals - we overheard two elderly women saying "Oh, I think they're filming Midsommer Murders".
  • The film is born heavily out of the frustrations that I've felt growing up in a quiet rural village. It tells the story of Jason, who's bored and frustrated - everybody around him seems to operate at a snail's pace. As a result, he has time for nobody. That's until he gets knocked down by a car. Laying in the road and forced to slow down for a moment, Jason realises that maybe he's been too dismissive.
  • The Confessional (Major)Filmed in the University Radio Studios and in a secondary school back in Bucks, the idea for the film came out of my involvement with student radio - and discussions about what could happen when we ran the first phone-in show. The film carries a dark and moody aura throughout, and ends with a twist.
  • Andy, presenter of late-night radio show 'The Confessional', is contacted by a caller (Graham) with an unusual confession. He confides in Andy - telling him about a woman he has a fixation with. Andy is soon led to believe that Graham is talking about an underage girl, however - all is not as it seems.
"The Chewing Gum Man"
  • Launch-image"The Chewing Gum Man" is a short documentary about the life of unique street artist Ben Wilson. Ben uses an interesting canvas for his detailed paintings - peoples discarded chewing gum which has been disposed of on the pavement. On hearing this story, people often fail to understand how detailed these paintings are; leading to a great surprise when they see the amount of detail Ben puts into these tiny paintings.
  • Starting his work in Muswell Hill, North London, Ben is aiming to create a trail of these images into central London. He has become a local celebrity in Muswell Hill and is given several requests for personal paintings on a daily basis.
  • This is a heart-warming documentary about a unique subject, showing how Ben's love for painting on this bizarre canvas has become his full time, but un-paid, job.
Holly Salter - "Urban Explorers"
  • Launch-image"Urban Explorers" is a short documentary film that follows a day in the life of two friends who share an unusual hobby. Daniel and Indy are both urban explorers and spend their free time exploring derelict, abandoned locations around the UK with the aim of preserving the site's memories and existence by "taking nothing but photos, and leaving only footprints".
  • The film depicts the intimacy of the pair, having been united by their hobby, which is hopefully presented by the comfortable conversation of the couple discussing their pastime as a voice over, which structures the narrative. The film uses footage of the location and their exploration and aims, alongside the voiceover which includes the audience in their experiences, expectations, emotions and excitement.

Adrian Scanlon - "Giving" and "Bottleneck"
  • Launch-imageFilm Selection 01: Minor Production – "Giving" (Dir. Adrian Permata Scanlon)
  • 'Giving' is a contemporary reminder to the younger generations. I feel that too many youths today have been brought up to focus a bit too much on themselves and self-priority in tandem with the notion that it is alright to neglect attention towards their elders.
  • Ben is an example of such a youth whose selfish behaviour may haunt him. That being said, there is also the consideration that violence is not the way forward. Old-fashioned brutality to achieve discipline is something that I as a filmmaker and person deplore - I have seen the consequences that this can have later on in life for children affected in such a way. I hope with optimism that there is a middle ground in which mutual respect can be achieved whereby the young of today take proper care of those who took care of them yesterday... tomorrow.
  • Film Selection 02: Major Production - "Bottleneck"(Dir. Adrian Permata Scanlon)
  • 'Bottleneck' is a film with importance in its timing. Based on the infamous national furore concerning young protestors using violence in retaliation to increased tuition fees, the film explores the motivations and issues at hand. Filmed with a desire to reach a predominantly young audience, the piece offers a truly contemporary rawness and plays with the visceral senses to set a tone befitting of the situation. The film is intelligent enough not to dictate but rather submit a portrayal of scenarios in which character motives and attitudes can be examined by an audience permitted to reach their own conclusions.
  • The film also boasts a roster of Bournemouth-based acting talent to offer something of a community inspired project. As talents from both Bournemouth University and the AUCB unite, I believe 'Bottleneck' to be a success not only on a filmic level but also in a wider sense in which it successfully builds bridges between two of the nation's leading producers of creative people.
Sam Shetabi - "City of Gold"
  • Launch-image"City of Gold" is a music video for the track, originally performed and written by Professor Green.
  • The principle character, a young city-slicker banker, struts through the video revelling in his fast, wealthy and stylish lifestyle. He walks through Canary Wharf bumping into anyone in his way, splashes his cash in a classy tailors and drinks heavily into the night with friends. The video takes a sinister turn however, as the banker get his comeuppance and is metaphorically robbed of his smug demeanour and brought crashing back to earth.
  • The video has a strong narrative that explores issues of class, mirroring the imagery evoked by the lyrics and taking the audience on a tour of London, the City of Gold.

Caitlin Siegers-Evans - "Fulfilling A Wish"
  • Launch-image"Fulfilling A Wish" is a 10-minute drama about persistence, rebellion, love and wishes.
  • Having committed suicide, Izabelle Knight has to carry out a community service sentence at the Post Office in the Sky, where earthly wishes are sorted for rejection or next-level analysis for granting.
  • Her strictly rule-abiding colleague and confidante, Bobby, does not approve when she forms a one-sided relationship with an earth-boy, Tom, who has a simple yet constantly rejected recurring wish. Despite Bobby's warnings and the mysterious Staff Manager pulling her into his office, she repeatedly visits Tom to see if she can fulfill his wish. But is there anyone to make her wish come true?

Callum Toms - "Playtime's over"
  • Launch-image"Playtime's over" is a short film based around the idea of playground make-believe. It is chiefly a comedy but also an action sequence that aims to convey the vivid imagination we have as children. The film focuses on playground games in which children pretend to be heroes and villains and displays the world of their imagination in a parodic action sequence with a satisfying conclusion. This is something that almost all of us will have experienced as children and this gives a reminiscent feel to any audience member watching it.
  • I am a Bournemouth University undergraduate studying Television Production and also a aspiring writer and director for comedy. I hope to achieve a successful, and more importantly, exciting career in television or film.
  • I have always been heavily inspired by the director Edgar Wright and have dreamt of having a career similar to his from a very young age. I have been passionate about my degree since I first heard about it at only 14 years of age. I dedicated my GCSEs, A Level subjects and my spare time towards becoming an ideal candidate for this highly competitive and well-regarded Television Production degree. I have not decided what route I will take once graduating but am considering starting my own production company so I can insure I have a career making products I am excited and passionate about. I hope you like my film!

James Trosh - "Edgar" and "Fighting Trump"
  • Launch-imageEdgar is a music video for Lucky Elephant's 'Edgar', which followed a toy robot's journey from an ordinary bedroom to a make-shift rocket that launches into space. I shot the footage in space for real, using a mini-HD camera and a helium filled weather balloon - which took unique footage of the toy robot over the backdrop of space 95,000ft above earth.
  • Fighting Trump
  • My major project was a documentary which investigates the residents affected by Donald Trump planned golf development in Menie near Aberdeen in Scotland. I shot the documentary over one weekend in Menie, where I visited three families who have been threatened with eviction by Trump, and saw first-hand how his development is changing the landscape of an area of land declared a Site of Special Scientific Interest.

Emma Worgan - "This New Day"
  • Launch-image"This New Day" Gabriel Romero was always a disappointment to his film director father and actress mother, having shown no signs of inheriting their creative talents.
  • As an adult, the fortune left to Gabriel by his late parents is dwindling and his public image is in rapid decline due to his partying, womanising lifestyle. Gabriel turns to writing in an attempt to build his career and improve his celebrity image - what lengths is he prepared to go to, and what is the cost?
  • This New Day is my final-year major project, and my first real attempt at writing and directing a short drama. I chose to specialise in sound during my third year, and have worked as a freelance sound recordist on several projects including BBC One's Turn Back Time: The High Street and a pilot for ITV's forthcoming Living The Lie. I hope to pursue a career in factual television production.

Elizabeth Zukowski - "Blind Golf Documentary"
  • Launch-imageThis documentary explores blind golf with the world blind golf champion Simon Cookson and his brother Jay Cookson. They offer their experiences playing blind golf, difficulties they faced and challenges they've overcome as well as their enjoyment of golf. Also, they tell us more about their visual impairment, Retinitis Pigmentosa and how this affected them personally.
  • Mark Rose explains to us his role in caddying for a blind golfer and the close relationship that is key to playing the game. This takes golf, which is considered an individual sport to a team game with the pressure on both the caddy and player to perform well in order to win.
  • As well as this a group of sighted golfers were given glasses to simulate different visual impairments. After some practice putting they played a hole and gave us their thoughts to how they felt playing golf without sight.
