Our academics and students are active members of the research community. Here we present a small selection of past conferences, papers, exhibitions and projects.

2008

June

Prof. Stuart Allan will be presenting at News for Young People in the Age of Digital Media, a one day conference, 24th June, White City Conference Centre. The day draws on original research conducted by Allan, Carter, Messenger Davies and Medes as part of a joint BBC/AHRC project 'What do Children Want from the BBC? Children’s Content and Participatory Environments in an Age of Citizen Media'. Pat Holland will also be speaking as part of the roundtable discussion 'Minding the Gap: News Provision for Teens.'

John Foster is presenting his play Little Boy about Hiroshima pilot Claude Eatherly at the Edingburgh Fringe. The play is part of John's PhD examining memory and film. There will be a special preview in Bournemouth on June 24th.

May

PhD Researcher Sukhpreet Singh presented at the International IP & Creative Industries Conference held at Birkbeck College, University of London on the 22nd and 23rd May 2008. Sukhpreet is researching intellectual property rights and international television formats. You can access his paper here.

Paula Callus has been engaged in fieldwork in Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Paula was observing the development of Project Ngando, the first feature length stop-motion film to be made by a Congolese director, J.M Kibushi. There are more details on the Paula's blog

Dr. Richard Berger, Andrew Ireland and Dr. Chris Pullen will all be presenting papers at the joint Popular Culture Association (PCA) and American Cultural Association (ACA) national conference External Link,

Dr. John Oliver will be presenting a paper on how media organisations can develop effective corporate and marketing strategies using an action learning methodology. International Action Learning ConferenceExternal Link, at Henley Management College. 17-19 March

February

Prof. Barry Richards will be part of a discussion panel examining the impact of media imagery of traumatic events on our social and emotional wellbeing. Screening Emotion will be chaired by David Aaronovich, Waterstones, Piccadilly, London. Feb 29th

Neal White will be exhibiting as part of (sk)interfaces at FACTExternal Link in Liverpool. The exhibition examines the uncertain limits between art and science. 1st Feb-30th Mar.

Dr. John Oliver will be presenting our Doctorate in Business Administration (Communication) and (Media) to practioners in media, PR and creative industries at the Broadcast Live and Video Forum Exhibition 2008External Link at Earls Court, London. Please come along for a chat on stand 52. 1st Feb

Prof. Sean Street will be presenting The Archive Hour External Linkon BBC Radio 4 January 5th 8pm, the programme will also be available on ‘Listen Again’. The feature looks at pre-war commercial radio in Britain and may well be the first time Radio 4 has run a commercial for Ovaltine.

Prof. Barry Richards gave an invited presentation at ‘Turning Psychosocial’ Conference Birkbeck College, University of London. The event examined the diversity of psychosocial studies in the UK, its extent, importance, influence and aimed for the creation of a forum to critically evaluate this emerging field. 17th Dec

Claudia Vieira External Link presented ‘Transmediation: Rethinking dynamic design for co-creation’ at the Crossmedia Storytelling International Conference External Linkin Mechelen Belgium. The conference examined the current state of cross media provision in journalism, entertainment and marketing communications. Claudia presented a rethink of future narratives in 360 degree design. 23rd-24th Nov

Prof. Barry Richards delivered the keynote address to the Annual Conference of Universities Psychotherapy and Counselling Association External Link, held at Bournemouth University. This year’s theme was ‘Hindrance or Help? The role of technology and new media in psychotherapy and counselling.’ 25th Nov

Dr. Carrie Hodges presented at the panel 'Sustainable Communities: Connecting People Locally and Globally for Sustainability'; as part of The Next Great Transformation: Sustainable Enterprise. A Conversation About The Future External Linkat The Eden Project, Cornwall.

Vicky Isely and Paul Smith gave a presentation on their computational artwork 'Ornamental Bug Garden 001' at the British Council,External Link London . 'OBG001' was the first computer art to be purchased by the council for their permanent collection.

Prof. Jian Jun Zhang, Dr. Lihua You, Dr. Xiaosong Yang and doctoral researcher Mariusz Pachulski presented the paper ‘Boundary Constrained Swept Surfaces’ at Eurographics 2007, External LinkPrague.

Members of the Visual Research Group including Steve Bell, Peter Hardie, Susan Sloan, Lizzie Sykes and Adam Vanner were invited to participate in Multichannel an exhibition organised by Artsway.

Prof. Sean Street celebrated the anniversary of 'The First BBC Prom' External Linkon BBC Radio 4 with a special programme investigating how radio saved the concert from the chop.

Prof. Sean Street presented his programme ‘Marie Slocombe and the BBC Archives’ External Linkthe true story of how one woman struggled against indifference to create what is now one of the world's most valuable media archives, on BBC Radio 4.

Prof. Stuart Allan and Prasun Sonwalkar presented  ‘Online Journalism and the Other: Creating New Spaces for Human Rights Issues in India,’ at the International Communication Association (ICA) Conference, San Francisco, USA.

Dr. Kevin Moloney gave an invited presentation ‘Can theories of power help us understand public relations better?’ to the Culture, Politics and Production Group, Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh.

Prof. Sean Street presented his programme 'The Splintered city – The 1917 Halifax Explosion' External Linkon BBC Radio 3. The programme explored the devastating effects of the biggest man-made explosion before the nuclear age.

Prof. Stuart Allan. gave the invited talk ‘Tellings of Truth: Citizen Journalism and the Internet,’ to the Cambridge Media Research Group, University of Cambridge.

Dr. Hugh Chignell was invited to speak to the Media Department at the University Sunderland on radio history.
