Dr Tom Watson is Reader in Communications. Dr Tom Watson joined The Media School in January 2007. Before then, he was Associate Professor in Communication and Head of the School of Communication at Charles Sturt University in Australia . He is teaching corporate public relations to final year BA (Hons) Public Relations students and other units on Masters programmes. He is an active researcher, with a focus on professionally-important topics such as measurement and evaluation; reputation management and issues management. Currently, he is running an international delphi study on priorities for public relations research and will shortly start research on current practices in public relations measurement and evaluation, in conjunction with the Association for the Measurement and Evaluation of Communications (UK) and the Institute for Public Relations (US). Before entering academic life, Tom’s career has covered journalism and public relations in Australia , the UK and internationally. He ran a successful public relations consultancy in Winchester for 18 years and was chairman of the UK ’s Public Relations Consultants Association from 2000 to 2002. During his consultancy career, Tom advised many major companies and undertook campaigns in the UK , Europe , North and South America , eastern and southern Africa and south Asia . Tom was awarded his PhD in 1995 from Nottingham Trent University for research into models of evaluation in public relations. With Paul Noble, he wrote “Evaluating Public Relations” which was published in 2005 by Kogan Page and has also been translated into Russian, Korean and Japanese. A revised, second edition is due for publication later this year. His other interests include flying, motor sport, reading and supporting Southampton Football Club and the NSW Waratahs.
