Dennis Mitchell Retrospective 2009 9 January 2009 |
On 25 March 2009, the 50th anniversary of the transmission of the television documentary 'Morning in the Streets', the Centre will host a one-day tribute to documentarian Denis Mitchell at the Lighthouse Arts Centre, Poole. The event will focus on Mitchell's little-known and fascinating BBC radio work during the mid 1950s, as well as his later television work for the BBC and Granada Television.
The retrospective will be expected to cover several themes, including the poetic television documentary and the notion of 'witness' and everyday reality, vernacular speech and oral history, and Mitchell's links with Free Cinema and Humphrey Jennings. Currently confirmed to speak are: John Corner (academic who has written widely on television history and documentary), Michael Darlow (filmmaker and television historian), Philip Purser (veteran television critic). It is expected that the filmmaker Mike Grigsby will speak of Mitchell's influence on his work. Several members of the CBHR will also contribute.
