2 PhD scholarships on offer for 2008

In 2007 the Media School awarded fully funded PhD scholarships to five exceptional students. These projects reflect the wide range of the school's research interests from developing new games animation techniques to practice based research in computer arts, understanding 21st century consumption and assessing creativity.

We are now offering two more bursaries for 2008. For details on how to apply please see our research centres' pages.

We've spoken to three of last years successful candidates about their particular areas of research.

Elliot Tagg Rebecca Jenkins
Rebecca studied Linguistics at the University of East Anglia and graduated in 2004. She did her MA in Marketing Communications here at Bournemouth, which helped formulate the basis for her PhD. Before starting her PhD, however, Rebecca worked in the marketing departments of Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and Porsche.

After her time in the professional world of marketing, Rebecca longed to return to the world of research and has based her PhD on Imaginary Consumption, looking specifically at the role of daydreaming in consumption.

It's a broad and fascinating area that has been neglected in the field she says. At the moment I'm working on narrowing my research focus as it's still early days.

Rebecca has found the Media School to be an excellent environment for research:

The academic staff are all passionate, enthusiastic and encouraging – they are great to be around and show a genuine interest in my work. I feel really valued as both a student and a member of staff. (Rebecca is currently teaching part time on the Communication and Marketing Research Level 1 unit of BA (Hons) Marketing alongside her PhD).

Rebecca hopes to become a full-time lecturer so that she can teach as well as research.
Elliot Tagg Mark Readman
Mark did his MA at Warwick University several years ago, before going on to teach media studies and production in Further Education.

Mark's PhD theme is on 'Assessing Creativity' and focuses on the nature of qualitative judgements made in HE screenwriting courses, on the assumptions made about creative work and gets into the details about what is considered a 'good' script.

Mark developed an interest in screenwriting and was also an examiner for an awarding body, and therefore has excellent practical experience to bring to his research.

While Mark enjoyed teaching, frustration about the lack of opportunity for academic research led him to take the route of a PhD studentship, enabling him to become a full-time learner.

Researching at the Media School has been a rewarding experience for Mark thus far:

The Media School in general, and CEMP in particular, is an exciting and dynamic place to work in which everyone seems committed to developing their own practice and sharing ideas. I’m hoping that the PhD will be an enriching experience in its own right, but I’m also looking forward to a subsequent academic career.
Elliot Tagg Yasumiko Garry
Yasumiko holds a degree in Aerospace systems engineering and worked as a designer for over 6 years before she joined Bournemouth in 1998 to do her MA in computer animation. After working in Film and TV production for the last seven years, Miko wanted a new challenge. Her particular PhD will allow her to study animation from a new perspective – and give her insight into animation that she says she would not achieve from simply working within the industry.

Miko's PhD, entitled 'Critical Computer Animation Production' focuses on emotional character animation and communication with audiences. One part of her research is a reflective study on her animation practices for narrative animation and game animation and their differences. She will also be looking at how other practitioners approach their work.

The other part of her research is to explore different ways to tune emotions for the audience in character animation, which allows Miko to experiment findings from other practitioners' practices and style to improve her own.

Miko says she enjoys the environment of The Media School as a place to research:

I feel very comfortable with the Media School since I was with the school 7 years ago. I didn't pick my PhD by chance and I consider the supervising person very important for my study. The staff gave me a good feeling before and although I didn't know Steve [supervisor] well at a time, I noticed that he was a good tutor.
