Graduates Grace the Airwaves

Three graduates from The Media School are featuring on our local airwaves.

Catherine Pugh and Jade Bowyer have both landed jobs as news presenters at local stations, and are graduates from the (BA) Multi-Media Journalism course.

"The best bit about my job is I get to find out everything first!" says Cathryn Pugh, 24, who graduated in 2005 and is now working as a newsreader at 2CR FM.

"When I came for the job at 2CR FM, the fact that I already knew the news patch really went in my favour, as did the reputation that The Media School at Bournemouth University has," she said.

Cathryn is passionate about her job and says that when she hears people complain about their jobs, she feels lucky to be doing something that she loves.

And if you re-tune your radio across to Fire FM, you’ll come across Jade Bowyer, 23, presenting the news.

"Every day I go to work and do something that I love. I get to meet and speak to amazing people, from politicians to celebrities. No two days are the same and sometimes it's a struggle to make myself leave the office!"

Jade graduated in 2006 and within a month of finishing her course, walked straight into her first job in radio.

"I fully stand by the fact that the BA Multi-Media Journalism course is the best in the country," Jade says. "I was taught every skill I needed to land my first job, and from there I’ve made the move back here to Bournemouth to work at Fire as I couldn’t stay away."

Jade's enjoying being back in Bournemouth for now but hopes to one day present on programmes such as Blue Peter or Newsround.

Rachael Ward is another BU Graduate who is no stranger to the microphone – in the form of her own radio show. Rachael, 23, graduated from BA Communications and Media in 2007 and is currently hosting the Student Show on Fire FM every Sunday.

"The show which airs on Sundays, from 12pm-2pm. It’s student-focused so we’ll talk about student issues, which involves researching and preparing clips and features. I’m in the process of getting trained at the moment, so I co-host the show and produce most of it as well," she says.

Rachael loves the buzz of live presenting:

"Because I’m fairly new to it I try to put as much into it as possible – it can also be daunting because it’s easy to make mistakes when live on air! But I’m improving over time!"
