BU Professor edits international journal

Prof. Stephen Deutsch from The Media School is the editor of the newly-published The Soundtrack - an international academic journal whose editorial board includes some of the most famous names in screen sound, including Walter Murch and Randy Thom.

The journal came about because there was a lack of published material on the subject:

"It occurred to me that there was very little published on the subject of the integrated soundtrack for films. Because we had been running a film composing MA since '92 and a Sound Design MA since '97, this omission impacted seriously on the scholastic level students could achieve. So, if there wasn't much material out there, we would have to write it ourselves. By that, I mean myself; Larry Sider, the sound designer and head of the School of Sound; and Dominic Power, head of Screen Arts at the National Film & Television School" said Prof. Stephen Deutsch.

The publication focuses on the importance of sound being unified with image, and while it is largely an academic journal, it also gives voice to the development of professional practice. The contributors have come from an array of sources, from games sound designers, academics, composers, and others.

The composition of the editorial board reflects the highest standards professionally and academically, including Randy Thom, sound designer of Simpsons Movie, Ratatouille, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, War of the Worlds, and Walter Murch, editor and sound designer for almost all Coppola's films, including: Apocalypse Now, The Godfather (I,II,III) as well as The Talented Mr Ripley, The English Patient, and Cold Mountain, as well as many others.

Academic members of the board include four of the most respected authorities on the subject for film soundtracks: Michel Chion, Rick Altman, Elizabeth Weis and Claudia Gorbman.
